Marissa Meyer brings readers the story of the infamous villain of Alice in Wonderland as a young girl in this captivating novel, before she became the Queen of Hearts. We follow Catherine Pinkerton as she tries to follow her dream of being a baker, while her parents push marriage to the King upon her and the life of a noblewoman. Catherine goes to balls, plays games, and deals with various interruptions to her happiness and her dreams as she meets a joker named Jest, with whom she begins a relationship. Meyer does a great job of including the elements of the book of inspiration by including characters such as the Cheshire Cat, the Mad Hatter, and by bringing other elements in, such as the cookies a person can drink to grow smaller or bigger, and talking animals complete with their own mysteries and qualities. The book is full of magic and quite easy to get drawn into. Throughout the novel, Meyer also keeps a level of mystique around the ending and how the events of Alice in Wonderland eventually come around, making it hard to guess what will push her over the edge. If you love romance and action, and fantasy retellings, this book will satisfy all your needs. If you are an avid baker, you might find interest in the different dishes and recipes Catherine bakes! And if this is your cup of tea, make sure to check out other books by Marissa Meyer!
