The Legend of Auntie Po is a graphic novel set in 1885, following the story of 13 year old Mei and her father as she works at a lodging camp, serving food for lumberjacks and Chinese workers. The story highlights the racism Mei and her family experience in their job as Chinese people in America despite being close to the boss, Mr. Anderson, and his daughter. Mei navigates the different privileges her and her best friend experience due to their cultures. She navigates her journey in finding faith in Auntie Po, a Chinese folklore that helps her stay connected to and admire her culture. Despite not reading graphic novels often, the art style, as well as the story and message delivered by Khor throughout this book is extremely well done. Although the plot is sometimes too fast-paced, the story still is very well developed. She is able to digest such a heavy and sensitive topic and make it understandable and enjoyable to read. If you enjoy historical fiction, coming of age, folklore or just a good story with well developed plot points and characters, while simultaneously not being too sugar-coated, then The Legend of Auntie Po is the book for you.
